Focus Area 4.2

Manage the learning environment:

Graduate Proficient Highly Accomplished Lead
Demonstrate the capacity to organise classroom activities and provide clear directions. Establish and maintain orderly and workable routines to create an environment where student time is spent on learning tasks. Model and share with colleagues a flexible repertoire of strategies for classroom management to ensure all students are engaged in purposeful activities. Initiate strategies and lead colleagues to implement effective classroom management and promote student responsibility for learning.

Through the use of my knowledge of managing educational learning environments I have been able to establish and maintain orderly and workable routines to create an environment where student time is spent on learning tasks. An example of this was the use of a routine warm-up which I would use at the start of every lesson for a group of year 7 students. The students became accustomed to this warm-up and performed it without any further instruction from me after the first few lessons. Each lesson, a student would facilitate the warm-up which was completed quickly, allowing for more time developing skills and game play.
